Overview of Careers Provision
We take pride in the consistent evaluation of our careers provision, ensuring that we proactively seek to respond to the needs of our students. As a result, each year group have a scheduled calendar of careers interactions which are closely aligned with the Gatsby benchmarks.
The below overview places a focus on each year group, outlining what students can expect to experience as part of their careers education and work-related learning programme in each academic year. In addition to the overview below, students also benefit from additional one-off events and activities such as visiting speakers, competitions and online events, as and when opportunities arise. Many of these are promoted through our LGS Futures bulletin as well as our Sixth Form newsletter.
The impact and success of our programme is evaluated using a range of information to include -
- student feedback on their experience of and learning from careers activities and events
- gathering informal feedback from external partners, parents and staff members
- student destination data post-16 and post-18
Our Careers Team meet regularly in order to discuss progress and reflect on the effectiveness of our programme, ensuring that any adaptations are made with clear strategy and intention.
Annual review cycle - most recent evaluation and update in December 2025.
Year 7 - ExplorationStude
- Students are encouraged to share their existing knowledge of the world of work through completion of the Future Skills Questionnaire in the early part of the academic year. Responses to these questions contribute to the shaping of our existing provision as we evaluate students' existing knowledge of the working world and career readiness in order to tailor an inclusive approach to careers.
- Students will participate in a series of dedicated PCS lessons which focus on the concept of success through a variety of career profiles. Sessions seek to emphasise the need for curiosity, flexibility and perseverance when exploring the working world. (Gatsby Benchmarks (GB) 2,4 & 5)
- Students will also attend an interactive workshop delivered by local employer SEGRO and in partnership with Learning to Work. This session introduces students to the wealth of careers available in the local area whilst also seeking to underscore the importance of key skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and communication in the workplace. (GB2/GB5)
Year 8 - Discovery
- Students build upon their initial exploration of the working world by participating in the Step into the NHS competition which is embedded into our tutor time programme. This allows students to not only discover the vast range of roles available within the healthcare industry but also to learn about the skills and qualifications required for specific positions. Students are introduced to the structure and content of job descriptions and are tasked with creating an engaging advert to showcase their learning. Such efforts have resulted in a numerous commendations from the competition's panel of judges. (GB2)
- Students are invited to attend our What Next? careers fair which offers several opportunities to discover a range of higher, technical and vocational education providers. (GB3/GB5/GB7)
- Students will participate in a tailor made Focus Day in the Summer Term which highlights the importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace. Emphasis is placed on gaining greater insight into the self in order to better understand how to improve working relationships with others. Students are reminded of the ever-changing nature of the world of work through provision of Labour Market Information whilst also reflecting on the links between the curriculum and careers. (GB2/GB4).
- The above provision is complemented by additional sessions delivered by our Careers Advisor and PCS teachers who place focus on the need for an increased awareness of own skills and interests as a means to discover potential career paths in the future. (GB2/GB4)
Year 9 - Choice
- Students will undertake a second Future Skills Questionnaire in Year 9 to measure the development of career-related learning and to further identify areas of need. Questions remain the same in order to provide a consistent reference point. As with Year 7, responses to these questions contribute to the shaping of our existing provision as we evaluate students' developing knowledge of the working world and career readiness in order to support an inclusive approach to careers.
- Students will benefit from a session delivered by our Careers Advisor who seeks to identify and deconstruct common myths surrounding career pathways in the lead up to our GCSE Options process at the start of the Spring Term. Students are signposted to an array of careers related websites to help support their own research. They are reminded of the varying training and education pathways available to them which builds on their attendance at our What Next careers fair in Year 8. (GB2/GB4)
- Parents and guardians are invited to attend an online meeting which focusses on the next steps for GCSE Options process as well as providing an overview of the options curriculum at KS4 level to help inform decision making. (GB4)
- Students engage in a comprehensive GCSE Options process which includes a designated assembly which outlines intentions and available support. Students are allocated an individual staff member who guides and supports them in their research into subject choices at GCSE level. This takes place during two scheduled meetings before students are asked to make their final choices. (GB3/GB4)
Year 10 - Preparation
- Students attend our What Next? careers fair which offers opportunity to engage with a range of higher, technical and vocational education providers. Parents and guardians are invited to attend during an additional session which takes place at the end of the school day. (GB3/GB5/GB7)
- Students take advantage of scheduled form time sessions which culminate in the delivery of individual presentations on a potential career path of their choice. Presentations are preceded by ample guidance which is grounded in reflections on destination data and the provision of Labour Market Information. (GB2/GB3/GB4).
- Students have the option to undertake Morrisby Psychometric Profiling which is designed to help students make informed decisions about their future by identifying individual strengths and aptitudes through assessments of abilities, interests and personality traits. By matching personal profiles with suitable academic pathways and career options, Morrisby helps to guide informed decision-making, particularly at key transition points. Students can meet with our Careers Advisor to better understand the outcomes of this assessment and discuss potential pathways (GB2/GB3/GB4/GB8).
- In preparation for their Year 11 Mock Interview Day, students will attend a scheduled assembly which explores the premise and expectations of the recruitment process. A series of PCS lessons guide students on how best to construct a successful CV whilst English lessons focus on the crafting of an effective cover letter aligning itself with the teaching of GCSE English Language Transactional Writing. Students submit an application for one of three hypothetical job advertisements and will attend an interview for this role upon their return in the Autumn Term of the next academic year. (GB3/GB4).
- Parents and guardians can also take advantage of an online information meeting in the Summer Term. This provision offers key information to help parents to support their child in making informed decisions regarding the next steps in their education and potential future career. Topics include, but are not limited to, an overview of careers-related opportunities across KS4, further information on Post-16 pathways as well as insights from the current job market and case studies based on LGS alumni. (GB2/GB3/GB4).
- Students will also attend scheduled assemblies delivered by members of the Careers Team or FE providers which offer insight into the full range of options available upon completion of GCSE qualifications to include vocational and technical qualifications, apprenticeships and T-Levels (GB3/GB4/GB7)
Year 11 - Practice
- Students will undertake a third and final Future Skills Questionnaire in Year 11 to measure the development of career-related learning across KS3 and KS4. Questions remain the same in order to provide a consistent reference point. As with Year 7 and 9, responses to these questions contribute to the evaluation of our existing provision and allows for the identification of further areas of development into KS5.
- Students participate in a Mock Interview Day in the early part of the Autumn Term; a provision which is facilitated by our partners at Learning to Work. Students meet with a business volunteer for 30 minutes to include verbal feedback at the end of their scheduled interview. Students also engage in a scheduled form time which focusses on further written feedback from interviewers with additional opportunity to reflect upon individual performance. (GB3/GB5)
- Students will also attend a one-to-one careers guidance meeting with our Careers Advisor. Appointments are tailored to student needs with personalised action plans shared with students following their meeting. Each action plan summarises the key discussion points and signposts students towards relevant websites and other sources of career-related information. Students may attend further drop-in sessions which are available across three days per week. (GB3/GB8)
- Students are encouraged to utilise the guidance received from our Careers Advisor to help facilitate discussions with a range of higher, technical and vocational education providers at our What Next? careers fair. Parents and guardians are once again invited to attend during an additional session which takes place at the end of the school day. (GB3/GB5/GB7).
- Students engage in two tailor-made Focus Days across the Autumn and Spring Term. The first Focus Day involves a series of interactive workshops created in response to identified trends in Labour Market Information. Workshops allow students to explore organisational structures and employee pathways with opportunity to complete an industry-related group task. This culminates in a Speed Networking afternoon session which allows students meaningful encounters with a wide range of employers from an array of industries. The second Focus Day includes an off-site workplace visit to better understand how a large multinational organisation works, how the various departmental functions contribute to the success of a business and the range of careers opportunities they may offer. (GB2/GB5/GB6)
- Students attend a further 1:1 interview with a senior member of staff or member of Sixth Form team to discuss post GCSE options and intentions. This complements the information and advice on A Level options provided via our Sixth Form Taster Week and scheduled assemblies as well as our Sixth Form Open Evening. Again, further appointments may be made with our Careers Advisor should students require additional guidance on next steps. (GB8)
- To aid transition into the Sixth Form, students return to school following their GCSE exams for one day in the latter part of the Summer Term. Students are reminded of the importance of work experience and are encouraged to identify opportunities for shadowing and/or volunteering during the Summer holidays (GB7).
- Throughout this year, students benefit from a number of career-related assemblies. We welcome external speakers from providers of vocational and technical post-16 courses to ensure that all students are made fully aware of the options made available to them following GCSE exams (GB7).
Years 12&13 - Sixth Form
- Our tutorial programme in Year 12 covers topics such as improving employability in a changing labour market and future career pathway. Students in Year 13 share advice on completing personal statements with students in Year 12. (GB2/GB3)
- On our Focus Day in November, students in Year 12 complete the 'Talk about the future' workshop devised by the oracy charity Talk the Talk, which further develops students' interview skills for HE, apprenticeships and future employment. (GB3)
- In the Spring term, we organise a speed networking event, where students are able to meet a range of employers and find out more about work in different private and public sector organisations. (GB5)
- Students in Year 12 attend our What Next? careers fair in the Spring term, where they are able to speak to a range of employers and providers of higher, technical and vocational education. (GB5/GB7)
- In June, our annual one-day ‘Towards the Future’ careers and HE conference is held where past students from Langley Grammar School talk enthusiastically about their experiences since leaving school. They range from recent leavers where the rigours of the UCAS application process or employer selection process are still fresh in their memories to older alumni who may be more established in their careers and who bring a different perspective to their discussions with students. Other speakers include representatives from universities, apprenticeship and school-leaver scheme providers and gap year organisations. This event provides an excellent foundation from which students can start to consolidate their research over the summer holidays in preparation for making their applications to universities and/or school-leaver schemes at the start of Year 13. (GB5/GB7)
- As part of our enrichment lecture series, students will hear from AWE, a provider of degree-level apprenticeships. (GB7)
- Also throughout the year, we support students in Year 12 completing work experience to develop their understanding of the world or work and help inform their future decisions. (GB5/GB6)
- Extensive support is provided to students in completing their UCAS applications. This process begins in the autumn of Year 12 where students attend a lecture on how to apply to the most competitive universities. Additional specialist support is provided for students applying for vocational courses (like Medicine and Dentistry) and for those following the Oxbridge Pathway. Throughout the Sixth Form, students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of super-curricular events and activities, designed to broaden their horizons and to prepare them for life beyond Langley Grammar School. (GB3)
- Students can seek advice and guidance through unlimited booked one-to-one interviews with the Careers Advisor and through a drop-in service at morning and lunchtime breaks. All students in Year 12 attend a one-to-one interview with our Careers Advisor, organised by the school in the spring term (GB8).
- Current opportunities are promoted in a regular Sixth Form newsletter. Features include upcoming work experience placements, careers-related webinars, apprenticeship and school-leaver schemes, careers exhibitions, taster days with universities and local firms, new resources (such as websites and podcasts) and public lectures organised by nearby universities. (GB3)
